About the Project:

The Rikers Island Public Memory Project: A Community Truth and Healing Process, an initiative led by JustLeadershipUSA in partnership with Create forward and the Humanities Action Lab, is an opportunity to integrate community reflection, healing, and dialogue in the ongoing campaign to close the Rikers Island Jail.

For generations, Rikers Island has had a devastating impact on communities of color and those who have been economically disenfranchised in New York City. Nearly 90% of the people detained at Rikers are Black and Latino and 80% have not been convicted of a crime but languish in Rikers without the right to a speedy trial because they cannot afford bail. Rikers represents a culture of racialized and class-based punishment that cripples these communities.

The Rikers Island Public Memory Project aims to harness the public memory process to shift the criminalizing narratives about the people detained at Rikers, while cementing a public commitment to the closure of New York City’s “Torture Island.” Most importantly, this initiative will create opportunities for the communities who live the damaging consequences of Rikers, to envision and build a more equitable future of justice in NYC.
