Osborne’s Court Advocacy Services has long been a trusted and valued resource within the New York City court system, helping stakeholders to balance the competing values of punishment and treatment, retribution, and compassion. We provide services in a comprehensive manner, based on a strong knowledge of the internal workings of the court. We have proven our ability to present alternative plans accepted by the District Attorney and the Court that genuinely put individuals on a path to a better life. We conduct assessments using scientifically validated instruments; target services to those best able to benefit; and advocate for alternative programs that directly address the factors related to criminal behavior in each individual’s case.
When Osborne's other programs are not able to directly provide the services an individual needs, we ably draw from a large pool of organizations and institutions to create an appropriate ATI service plan. At each stage in the process, we work with partner organizations, defense counsel, the Court, probation, and prosecutors to support individuals as they work toward their goals, keeping in close communication with our staff. We understand that change is a process and that people’s needs – and the programs and services able to meet those needs – may change. We are mindful of the impact of our work on individual victims and the community and are committed to outcomes that consider and support public safety.
While we report to the Court any failure of a participant to comply with the conditions of release, we also advocate in court for sensible responses to poor decisions, keeping the longer term goal in mind. Our skill in clinical assessment, service planning, matching individuals with services, the quality of our reports to the Court, our steady case management, our continuing review of service plans (reassessing as appropriate) speak to the unique capacity we bring to the ATI process as a result of nearly three decades of experience and a passion for this work.
"I highly recommend the services of the Osborne Association. I have referred many of my clients to Osborne for pre-pleading reports and for referrals for counseling and treatment. Their caseworkers are knowledgeable and attentive to my clients' needs. Their reports and referrals have been invaluable in helping me secure non-jail dispositions in cases where the only prior offer was incarceration."
