Celebrating Osborne’s Phenomenal Women

Earlier this month, nearly 50 women who participate in Osborne’s Women With a Plan program attended the second annual “Phenomenal Women” empowerment event. The celebration highlighted the women’s growth and resilience, and the transformative relationships they’ve built with each other.  It included a panel of community leaders who shared personal stories about how the support of their community and nonprofits like Osborne helped them to rebuild their lives during and after their experience with the carceral system.

Karen Thomas, a parishioner at event host Trinity Church, spoke about her work advocating for changes to laws affecting women who have experienced domestic violence during their incarceration. Community activist Donna Hylton reflected on the support she received and encouraged women to center their voices, define themselves, and recognize their potential, emphasizing that healing happens together.

Community activist John Bunn honored his mother and the many women who supported him during his incarceration, saying, “When the system tried to define me, [my mom] reminded me of who I was.” Jessica Jones, a motivational speaker and educator with the Prison Wives Support Program, shared insights on resilience and life with loved ones impacted by incarceration.
 

The event ended with a Q&A session and a shared meal, highlighting the power of mentorship and community.

Osborne’s Women With a Plan program supports women affected by incarceration or with loved ones who are currently incarcerated. It offers case management, educational guidance, and workforce reintegration support to help participants build community and achieve their goals.
