Join "See Us, Support Us" this October

This year, SUSU focuses on supporting children’s physical health and emotional wellbeing.

On Saturday, Osborne’s New York Initiative for Children of Incarcerated Parents launches the eighth-annual See Us, Support Us month. See Us, Support Us raises awareness about and increases support for children of incarcerated parents. SUSU is a year-round effort alongside local, state, and national partners, culminating in a month of action every October.

This year, SUSU focuses on supporting children’s physical health and emotional wellbeing. Experiencing the incarceration of a parent is a common adverse childhood experience and a public health issue. Children of incarcerated parents and their families are facing immense challenges due to the Covid-19 pandemic, including years of suspended in-person visiting and fears about the health of incarcerated loved ones. (People who live in correctional settings experience extraordinary risk of exposure to Covid-19). As we collectively take steps to heal and stay healthy, we must consider the unique needs of the 1 in 14 children in the U.S. - and those worldwide - who experience parental incarceration and the trauma that results.
Please watch the SUSU Youth Team’s video to learn more about this year’s month of awareness.
On the SUSU website, you can learn how to support children’s wellbeing in health and mental health settings, and beyond; find self-care tips and resources to help you cope with parental arrest, incarceration, and reentry; hear from young people about how best to support and collaborate with them, celebrate their creative talent, and gain strategies for creating judgment-free, validating environments. Finally, please become part of the SUSU Network to receive weekly updates during October, action alerts, and quarterly emails throughout the year.

Thank you for seeing and supporting children of incarcerated parents this October, and always.
Please join us on Tuesday, November 1, 2022 for our annual fundraising event, Lighting the Way. The reception begins at 6pm, and the benefit dinner and program starts at 7pm at 583 Park Avenue, New York City. RSVP by October 14.

#SeeUsSupportUs Youth Fellow Oluwademilade “Olu” O. Ogunlade wrote a powerful piece for Brennan Center for Justice at NYU Law about her experience as the child of an incarcerated parent. The article, titled “Protecting the Connection Between Parents in Prison and Their Children,” offers policy solutions to help families impacted by incarceration stay connected.
Congratulations to the inaugural graduating classes of YES! Newburgh and the Bronx-Osborne Gun Avoidance Program (BOGAP), two programs we launched this summer that serve young people and support their success. Both programs have exceeded expectations and we look forward to sharing more about their achievements soon.
Join us in our work to build a justice system that promotes healing, safety, accountability, and real opportunities to thrive.
