Housing Access

Housing
Issue/Problem

Housing discrimination is a huge barrier to people seeking to rebuild their lives after a criminal conviction or incarceration. Landlords and brokers may turn away applicants on the basis of even a minor criminal record. Laws and policies delay or deny their access to public housing. Their dependent children and welcoming families suffer the consequences as well.

What We’re Doing

We are advocating to change laws so that formerly incarcerated people may rejoin their families and find security in public housing. We also work for new laws that would prohibit discrimination against people seeking a home on the basis of their criminal records. In these efforts, we are proud to be part of the Fair Chance for Housing Coalition and United for Housing.
