Child-Sensitive Arrest Bill signed into law!

Osborne

December 23, 2024

On behalf of children and families across New York State, Osborne Association is thrilled and immensely grateful to Governor Hochul for signing the Child-Sensitive Arrest Bill into law. We are immensely proud of the young people in Osborne’s Youth Action Council, who shared their personal experiences and championed this bill for years. Their tireless advocacy will help to minimize trauma for the thousands of children across the state who are present during the arrest of a parent each year.

The bill requires New York State to develop written policies and procedures ensuring police officers safeguard and arrange for continuing care of minors whose parents or guardians are arrested. It will ensure all police departments throughout the State can provide essential tools and guidance for Officers interacting with children in stressful and challenging situations.

Today marks a critical milestone in our efforts to advocate for children and families impacted by the criminal legal system. We are grateful to the courageous young people in our Youth Action Council, and to Buffalo Police Department, Erie County Sheriff’s Office, the Town of Tonawanda Police Department, Chief Cox and the Albany Police Department, NYC Police Department, Assemblymember Clyde Vanel, Senator Jamaal Bailey, Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes, and former State Senator Velmanette Montgomery for their partnership and support of the Child-Sensitive Arrest Bill.
