New York State’s Aging Prison Population Share of Older Adults Keeps Rising

New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli issued a report this month on the state of the Aging Prison Population in NYS. The report emphasizes that while the overall population of those in state custody has significantly declined in the past 20 years, the percentage of those inside who are 50 years of age and older has doubled– from 12% in 2008 to 24% as of 2020. Nearly 1 in 4 individuals in State prisons are 50 and older.
